IM IRAN
Not only the sensuality at every corner through colors, smells, noise, curiosity and sensitivity of the people, but also brutal remnants of past wars and present-day conflicts. In a society where many human emotions and needs can only be expressed in private, it is a challenge to photograph portraits in the public sphere. With much of the skin of both men and women being covered, and with certain interactions being forbidden in public, simple gestures like hand movements became much more significant to me. This perception stayed with me even after leaving Iran while photographing in other societies.
In many of my longer-term projects, I found that I can sustain the work when having some conflicting relationships with the theme or context I am working in; many questions will come up, leading to different, sometimes opposing feelings. Iran was no exception.
